Grieving Together

We are deeply saddened by the death of Corey Durell Ruiz. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Ruiz’s family, friends and all those grieving this profound loss.

This tragedy has shaken our community. When a life is lost during an encounter with law enforcement it affects not only those closest to the individual but also our community’s sense of safety, trust and belonging — especially among communities that have experienced disproportionate harm and unequal treatment. Such events call for careful examination, transparency and accountability.

We urge the City of Madison and the Madison Police Department to:

1. Fulfill the commitment to a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Ruiz’s death.
2. Review policies, training and practices to ensure that preserving human life remains the highest priority in every public safety response.

Equity is central to Madison Community Foundation’s mission, values and work. We know that racial disparities exist in our community, and apart from any role they may have played in this incident, there is clearly work for all of us to do.

We also recognize the difficult and often dangerous work performed by law enforcement officers. We are grateful for those who serve our community with professionalism, compassion and integrity. At the same time, preserving human life must remain the highest priority in every public safety encounter, and every use of force resulting in the loss of life warrants independent review and public accountability.

As the community’s foundation, we remain committed to bringing people together, supporting efforts that strengthen our community, and working toward a future where everyone can live, feel safe, thrive and belong.
